Korina Jocson

Korina Jocson 
Korina Jocson is Assistant Professor of Education at Washington University in St. Louis. For the past decade, Jocson has collaborated with university programs, schools, and community-based organizations to engage students at various levels in cultural production and literacy development. She has worked with pre- and in-service teachers as well as youth advocates to incorporate poetry, popular culture, and new media in multicultural classrooms. Jocson is the author of Youth Poets: Empowering Literacies In and Out Schools (Peter Lang, 2008). Published works, including articles, essays, and poems, have appeared in English Education, English Journal, and Multicultural Education, among others. Experimental shorts have also been selected and featured at the Women of Color Film Festival in Berkeley, CA.

Workshops

“Youth Poetry and Media Production in 21st Century Classrooms”
Audience:  Grades 6-12 teachers, teacher educators, literacy coaches
Focus:  Teaching poetry and writing across media platforms

This workshop will provide an overview of youth poetry and spoken word in relation to hip-hop and new media culture.  Participants will be introduced to a pedagogical stance that treats poetry as a democratic medium with possibilities for artistic and political empowerment among historically marginalized populations. Participants will read, view, and discuss contemporary poems, including the works of emerging and established youth poets. Building on writing as process, participants will also write their own poems to incite or further develop innovative ideas for media production in their own settings. Included in the workshop will be a look at existing youth programs, community-based organizations, and other related resources. 

“Popular Culture and Literacy Development”
Audience:  Grades K-5 and 6-12 teachers, teacher educators, literacy coaches
Focus:  Integrating popular culture into English language arts

This workshop will provide an overview of popular culture and will examine various examples of music, film, books, magazines, and other popular cultural texts relevant in the lives of young people. Participants will consider current trends in popular culture as one means to innovate practice, motivate reluctant readers/writers, and address the literacy achievement gap. Participants will have an opportunity to interpret texts, work in small groups, and apply ideas particular to their own contexts. 

“Media Literacy Education and Global Citizenship”
Audience:  Grades K-5, 6-12 teachers, teacher educators, administrators
Focus:  Teaching media literacy and global citizenship

This workshop will provide an overview of the media literacy education movement and wrestle with the possibilities of teaching media literacy and global citizenship in the classroom.  Participants will have an opportunity to tease apart concepts and examine classroom-based scenarios.  Sample questions that will guide the workshop are: Why should educators consider youth’s interaction with various media?  What does media literacy have to do with education and globalization?  Why is it critical for 21st century teachers and teacher educators to take into account global citizenship as a part of their pedagogy? What are the implications for students at various levels?
